Mining Residue Workshop

Central Branch

Join the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA)'s Central Branch for a workshop on mining residue. The workshop will take place on 24 May 2017 at 10:00 at Sibanye Platinum Recreation Club, Bleskop, Rustenburg.

Topic: Planning and Management of Residue Stockpiles and Residue Deposits: The Risk Based Approach.

The Department of Water Affairs recently gave permission that a risk based approach be followed when determining the barrier systems required for residue stockpiles and deposits. The risk based approach entails source-pathway-receptor modelling and the protection required for the ground and surface water resources based on the risk posed to the receptor. The main aim of the approach is to allow for the pollution control barrier system, required for residue stockpiles and residue deposits, to be determined on a case by case basis, based on a risk analysis conducted by a competent person. In this regard the Department of Environmental Affairs recently published proposed amendments to the National Environment Management: Waste Act providing for textual amendments to provide clarity, consequential amendments and transitional arrangements.

Please join us at this workshop to discuss these matters with industry leaders.
