Waste-to-Energy Workshop (and Webinar)!

Central Branch

Join the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa's (IWMSA) Central Branch for a Waste-to-Energy (WtE) workshop and webinar. The workshop (and webinar) will take place on 21 November 2017 at 12:00 at the BYTES Conference Centre in Midrand, Gauteng.

South Africa's waste is in many ways a resource. The country's commitment to sustainable development requires that there be a balance between any new technological applications and the broader economic and social challenges, while also protecting the environment.

Waste reduction and prevention is of utmost priority. However, once waste is produced disposing of it in a sustainable manner becomes a priority. The need for sustainable waste disposal has resulted in a focus shift to energy recovery within both the municipal and private waste sectors. Many municipalities are currently undergoing feasibility studies to determine the best alternative waste disposal method to landfill. Considering the current energy crisis in South Africa (SA), WtE may be the ideal method:

  • As an alternative to waste disposal by landfill.
  • To generate sustainable energy.

Purpose of the event

The IWMSA’s WtE workshop and webinar will focus on:

  • WtE projects that have been successfully implemented in SA; projects that are currently operational and reducing waste to landfill.
  • Projects that have gone through the feasibility process but failed to be executed, specifically focusing on the municipal environment.
  • Carbon offsetting opportunities considering the probability of a Carbon Tax being initiated in SA. This will include discussions about carbon offsetting standards, the pricing of carbon around the world, and what it means for future projects in SA.
